Syrians Exposed to the Elements at the Turkish Border

Reports | 25 05 2020

Backed by Russian aircraft, the regime’s army and the forces of “Democratic Syria” continue to advance in northern, rural Aleppo, leading to constant displacement of people seeking shelter on the Syrian side of the Turkish border.

Families gather in front of Baab al-Salama border crossing, hoping that the Turkish authorities will allow them to enter, but that has not happened. The number of people waiting is very large, and although the border crossing’s administration on the Syrian side has provided many tents for families to take shelter in, thousands of families are still sleeping outside.

The Challenges that Organizations Face

Many people question the seriousness of some Syrian Opposition organizations and agencies in dealing with the situation on the ground. However, after a closer look at the day-to-day operations they manage, one discovers just how many challenges they face.

Mohamad Kilani, the manager at Baab al-Salama border crossing, points out that establishing camps is not an easy task. “We built a temporary camp in August of last year, but it cannot contain the influx of refugees we are witnessing these days,” he said.

“The international organizations that support our efforts only help when a great disaster befalls, and yet we are in urgent need to build refugee camps. If we had been able to preemptively establish a refugee camp, we would be using it today,” he added.

The fierce fighting and the constant airstrikes forced nearly 150,000 Syrian people to head towards the Syrian side of the Turkish border. They live in very harsh conditions and all the international community does is condemn the war.
