Agronomist Abbas Shahoud is no longer able to remain stay in his hometown of Akhtarin in the Aleppo countryside. Daesh now controls it and has seized his house. Turkey was the only way out left for him.

Living in Turkey certainly was a costly undertaking for Shahoud and his family. He therefore decided to start a business within his area of expertise—the cultivation of Mulukhiyyeh [mallow], a plant completely unknown to Turks.

The agronomist started his project by cultivating two hectares of mallow last year; basing his marketing effort on those Syrians residing in various Turkish cities. He thereby became the first Syrian to enter Mulukhiyyeh cultivation into this country.

The agronomist had not only profit on his mind when he conceived this project; he also wished to assist the many unemployed Syrians in the city of Kilis in southern Turkey where he now resides. He offered many of them jobs in his project.

Shahoud’s ambition is to introduce Turks to the [traditional Syrian] Mulukhiyyeh dish, rich in minerals and vitamins. He wants to make it a constant fixture of Turkish market,s particularly since the number of Syrians in the city of Kilis almost exceeds its Turkish population!
