Many people in the North Hama region have taken permanent refuge in caves, due to the bombing by the Syrian regime forces of the region; resulting in the destruction of many of their homes, and causing the death of numerous civilians.
Life underground, therefore, looks much better than above it for these residents. They have smuggled all their meagre belongings in these caves which they, in turn cleaned up, furnished, and set up as alternative abodes, in all details.
According to Abu Ahmed, a resident of the northern Hama countryside, the cost of drilling a single cave is in excess of 75 thousand Syrian pounds [or US $200]. For many people completely without any source of income, this means having to carve their own cave—or new home, actually!—with their own hands and, thereby, save the money for other necessities for their families.
