Suq al-Tanabel... From Shaalan to Istanbul!

Syrians carry with them to their diasporas and countries of asylum their crafts, habits, and traditions; as well as their marketable and practical ideas. One example, is that of the famed Suq al-Tanabel" [Sloth Market] in the Shaalan district of the capital Damascus. This has now also become available, in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

One Syrian lady in Istanbul started this project, which provides all kinds of vegetables prepared and ready for cooking: Zucchinis ready for stuffing; tomatoes squeezed and sorted; beef also, cut and diced in various forms; Kibbeh [finely minced meat] ready; in addition to many other varieties of cooking ingredients.

The project idea originated from a Facebook page entitled "Istanbul's Tanabel Suq," aiming to meet Syrians' needs in the city; especially young people, who cannot cook. They found this "market's" products a handy way of eating home-cooked meals and, thereby, alleviate their feeling of alienation and displacement.
