Typhoid has become widespread in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus... With 60% of hospitals out of operation with a shortage of medicines and blood supplies.
In a news report on Sunday, the British daily "The Independent" warned of a "public health catastrophe" threatening Syria in light of the spread of epidemic diseases including typhoid, chronic diarrhea, hepatitis, and others.
The report, entitled "Syrians' health catastrophe threatens the entire region" indicated that "Syria is on the brink of a health catastrophe, because of the spread of epidemic diseases such as typhoid and chronic diarrhea, and many other diseases such as hepatitis C—thereby constituting a threat to the entire region, and even Europe."
The typhoid epidemic is a contagious disease, caused by a certain type of bacteria called "Salmonella Typhi," and is transmitted via food and drinks contaminated with the bacteria. These bacterial cells subsequently invade the liver, spleen, and lymphatic system.
The report quoted Professor John Ashton, who warns that "typhoid has spread last month in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus," warning of "the spread of cholera and tuberculosis, as well as development of a new strain of bird flu."
The Syrian regime’s army has laid siege to the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus for more than a year now, amid a severe shortage of food and medical supplies. Many child deaths have been recorded, due to hunger and shortage of medicine.
Ashton also points out that "60% of the hospitals in Syria are not functioning, as there is a dire shortage of medicine and blood," stressing that "the health situation in Syria on the verge of an inevitable humanitarian catastrophe."
The World Health Organization [WHO] recently stated that more than half of the hospitals in Syria were damaged as a result of the conflict; while the European Union announced earlier, that upwards of 200 thousand Syrians have died during the “crisis," due to disease, lack of health care, and medicines. The regime’s government has labeled these claims as "false and inaccurate."
