Most Victims from Damascus and Deraa
The Syrian Human Rights Network announced Friday having documented the killing of at least 46 people under torture in the prisons of the Syrian regime, and other parties, during the month of September 2015; noting that this figure comprised a large number of academics and artists.
In its report on the victims of torture this past month, the network advised that 44 people died due to torture at the hands of the regime; while one person died at the hands of forces of the Kurdish self-government, and another at the hands of armed opposition groups.
As per the statistics recorded in the report, the highest number of torture victims was in the provinces of Damascus and Deraa with 11 victims; 9 people in Hama, and 9 in Deir al-Zour, two in Idlib, and one in each of Aleppo, Homs, Quneitra, and Raqqa.
The Network's report emphasized that this number of fallen victims of torture aper month "conclusively displays that it is a systematic policy, stemming directly from the head of the ruling authority," noting that all the pillars of the regime's Government are fully aware thereof. It also added that some of the armed opposition factions exercised acts of torture as well, which constitute war crimes, according to the report.
The Network pointed out that the Syrian regime does not admit to the arrests and deaths under torture; pointing out that the information is obtained either from former detainees, or from families who have access to information about their detained relatives.
In thr conclusion of its report, the Network called upon the UN Security Council, to enforce its resolutions issued on Syria; and to require all the parties and to hold accountable all those who violate them.
