More than a year has passed on the the siege of the Eastern Ghouta [Damascus countryside] by the Syrian regime forces. Many harsh months that have not prevented residents from life; the combination of their dire straits and their needs, has generated numerous inventions that aim to adapt to this new reality.
One such inventions was a solar cooker, that helped some families to circumvent the gas shortage, due to the [regime forces'] imposed prohibition of gas entering those areas.
On this issue, says Abu Yassin, who invented the cooker: "I saw the idea on the Internet and started to tinker with it. I cut [disused] mirrors into smaller pieces, then used adhesive to install these tiny mirror-pieces on a satellite receiver dish, and direct them towards the focal point—where the cooking pot will be suspended."
This experiment which started as an individual effort and initiative, soon generated collective demand in the Eastern Ghouta; as raw materials wehere abundant. Residents picked up what was left of their—or others'—home windows that had been destroyed by bombing, to secure the raw materials for the making of the solar cooker.
This innovative piece of household equipment has, to date, been introduced to more than fifty houses in the Eastern Ghouta. It represents an ingeniously simple innovation with great energy; one that helps ease the crisis suffered by the people of the Ghouta since the start of the siege.
