Hama Countryside: Garden Vegetables Cheaper!

Hama Countryside: Garden Vegetables Cheaper!

Reports | 25 05 2020

Home gardens have turned into small groves for some residents of Hama, in central Syria. They are planting their own vegetables, to help secure their needs, in light of high prices, and their weakened purchase power.

Abu Abdo, a Hama native, tells Rozana that he no longer has any use for decorative plants; compared to his and his family's need for vegetables, in the absence of any income for the family. As for the main crops planted in these gardens, that have been turned into small orchards, they are "eggplants, tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini"among others.

The inhabitants face a particular difficulty in securing the water necessary for the irrigation of these plants. They are forced to ration the drinking water which they purchase at 2000 [Syrian] Pounds per tank.

Home planting of vegetables has its benefits as Khaled, a native, says: "Home-planted vegetables are more affordable, and do not contain any hormones. Despite the cost [of cultivating them], they remain much cheaper than buying on the market."
