Ahmed used to work at a gas station on the international Aleppo-Damascus road. After the station was destroyed by the fighting, he returned to his native town in the Idlib countryside, and designed a primitive oil refining machine, in the bushes surrounding the town of Maarat al-Numan.
This machine is hazardous to the environment as well as to the inhabitants of the surrpounding area; what with its emissions of toxic gases into the atmosphere; as well as its rudimentary operation, and the elevated proportion of fumes resulting therefrom.

The aforementioned notwithstanding, the machine has met with a positive reaction among the inhabitants; it meets their needs for fuel, and provides the people of the region with the fuel they require. Some people, however, feel it would be best if the machine be moved to outside residential areas.
