DAMASCENE CUISINE IN AMMAN: STUFFED VINE LEAVES, PROVISIONS, AND SAD STORIES

Reports | 25 05 2020

Shami [Damascene] cuisine in Jordan has become a source of livelihood for many displaced Syrian families. It commenced with the famed diverse Shami platters and meals, before expanding to include the Mouneh [homemade provisions] for which Syrian homes are famed.

Mar'i al-Rez, Project Supervisor, confirms that they do not need financial support. They only hope to receive assistance in marketing their products, so as to enable the participating families working on this project to attain self-sufficiency.

Their Shami Kitchen now boasts its own page on Facebook, under the name of "Shami Cuisine and Foods Project;" which they are hopeful should contribute to the marketing efforts of their tasty meals. According to al-Rez, their work is dramatically improving and evolving, day after day.

Everyone working on this project has a tragically sad story to tell, says Umm Mohammed. Through this work, she found a means to put food on her plates, after her family had lost its breadwinners: Her son was arrested, and her husband died as a result of the war raging on in Syria.
