creativememory.org is the name of a website started by a group of Syrian Revolution activists. As is clear from its title, it aims to document the wealth of creative, artistic, and cultural output that emerged after the start of the Syrian Revolution.
The project organizers consider that they are thus contributing to the writing of contemporary history. They do so as a necessity to define the meanings of the Revolution and help convey them to future generations.
According to Mary Hanna, the project's General Coordinator, the site's significance comes from its "aim to document all forms of artistic and intellectual expression in the era of the Revolution." She believes that the explosion of this creativity, will make referencing it extremely difficult, if not properly documented.
Hanna adds that the idea of the project had been an early concern of the project's founders from the onset of the Revolution, each of whom possess specific artistic backgrounds. She says that "they experienced firsthand, at the onset of the Revolution, the moment of artistic and creative explosion, and the liberation of a spontaneous mindset, imagination, and spirit brought about by the Revolution. They also witnessed the huge spontaneous energies, hitherto hidden and suppressed inside every Syrian citizen, and the fervent desire to express themselves."
It is worth noting that the project commenced in 2012 with 200 items, today comprising in excess of 5,000 items translated into three languages, other than Arabic.
