We used to often complain of the failures and judicial corruption rampant in the Syrian legal community; as well as some legal gaps some considered offensive, such as laws on honor crimes, for example.
When the security situation took a turn for the worse in most Syrian areas, with some coming out of the regime's grip and under opposition control; we started to witness judicial failure, but of a different kind. Alternatives to Syrian law made their apperance in some of these courts, and were quickly adopted.
Opinions differ regarding the legitimacy of applying Islamic Sharia law in the areas out of regime control. Yet in many cases, applying Syrian law is extremely difficult in the absence of anyone willing to work with and apply it. Can Sharia offer a better alternative to the Unified Arab Code? What does the Syrian legislator say in this regard?
Today's episode of Lil Adaleh Matrah highlights the most important obstacles and risks faced by Syrian law. We also discuss the origins of this law, adopted decades ago, its legitimacy, its history, and its saliency in the current circumstances.
