Lena Shawwaf –Canada The rapid escalation of the war in Syria is making it increasingly difficult for Syrians to express their nationalism and love for their homeland without being forced to side with one of the conflicting parties there. This is exactly what a group of Syrian expatriates managed to do in Montreal, Canada through their participation in the Oriental Festival under the name "House of Syria." The group has created a work of art reflecting the architectural style of the houses in Old Damascus city. Maria Zarif*, a member of this group, explains that they made sure to register in their artwork even the smallest details of a traditional Damascene house such as the fountain, the jasmine, coffee pots …etc. to make Syrians feel as if they have returned to their homes, as well as to introduce Canadians and foreign tourists to another side of Syria away from the horrifying images of war and violence.” The Syrian Canadians activists were careful not to display any political symbols or flags to attract foreign tourists as well as other Syrians regardless of their political stance. Nihad*, another member of the group, believes that "Syria is more important than flags or politics. Leaders come and go, but Syria would remain forever" Syrian participants tried to show the festival visitors a different side of the war-torn Syria they watch daily in the news. They hope that the books and artworks they have displayed would introduce the visitors to the rich and beautiful cultural and architectural heritage of Syria. *Aliases
