Rozana, in collaboration with leading voices in the Syrian independent media sector, is launching efforts to establish a professional consortium aimed at ensuring long-term viability and sustainability for independent media organizations. This initiative includes a comprehensive mapping and needs assessment to identify independent media organizations, their audiences, areas of influence, and the challenges they face. The findings will inform programming, organizational development, and strategic long-term planning for the consortium.
Rozana is looking for a consultant to lead a comprehensive mapping and needs assessment of the Syrian independent media sector. This initiative aims to identify potential partners and stakeholders for a newly formed consortium of independent Syrian media outlets. The findings will play a pivotal role in shaping the consortium's strategic and programmatic planning.
Requested ServicesResearch Design:
Conduct a literature review of previously published mappings and needs assessments of Syrian independent media organizations. Identify existing gaps and leverage insights to refine research design and develop effective assessment tools.
Develop research and assessment tools tailored to the specific needs of consortium partners. Ensure these tools generate actionable and relevant findings to support consortium activities effectively.
Provide an inception report outlining the proposed methodology and assessment tools, integrating both qualitative and quantitative data collection, timeline, and key deliverables for the mapping and needs assessment.
Mapping and Needs Assessment:
Conduct comprehensive mapping and needs assessment research to:
Identify and assess Syrian independent media organizations and collectives, according to variables previously agreed upon with consortium partners.
Assess their audiences, areas of influence, challenges, and needs.
Virtual Roundtables:
Organize and facilitate at least two virtual roundtable discussions with identified Syrian media organizations and consortium partners. Findings from roundtable discussions should be integrated into the final report.
Deliverables
Mapping and Needs Assessment Report:
A comprehensive report detailing Syrian independent media organizations, their audiences, areas of influence, and the challenges they face.
Conclusions and actionable recommendations to inform consortium programming.
Virtual Roundtable Summaries:
Notes and summaries from at least two discussions with mapped organizations and initiatives, highlighting key insights, collaboration opportunities, and participant feedback.
Final Consultant Report:
A detailed report including research tools, data summaries, and recommendations for strategic planning.
Requirements and Qualifications
Advanced degree in Media Studies, Journalism, Social Sciences, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience may be considered.
Proven experience in research and analysis, particularly in the media sector, civil society, or conflict-affected contexts.
Strong understanding of the Syrian independent media landscape and the challenges faced by media organizations operating in conflict or post-conflict settings.
Demonstrated ability to design and implement qualitative and quantitative research tools.
Excellent writing and reporting skills in English; knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including media organizations and civil society actors.
Familiarity with organizational development and capacity-building frameworks is a plus.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex data into actionable recommendations.
